                - Dunkirk all over again -

If you have not played GIUKM0QQ - please do so, or at least read the text
file that puts the following scenario in perspective.

After the failure to prevent Russian strikes against the Norwegian NATO
bases, the battle for air superiority over Norway was decided in favor of
the Russians. With Air superiority the Russians reaped enormous benefits in
the ensuing ground war, and now NATO faces the unpalatable task of evacuating
its forces, Dunkirk style, from the Norwegian port of Narvik. The US naval
forces are, in large part, tied up defending the Icelandic bases from Russian
attack, and so the task has fallen, once again to the British Navy.

Russian Disposition

The Russian forces have captured the badly damaged Norwegian base at Orland,
and established a forward airbase capable of launching attack aircraft at a
civilian airport in now overrun Sweden. Although many naval forces have
been committed in the Icelandic theatre, the Russians still have one carrier
group to hurl against the naval group saddled with the evacuation task. In
addition there are several Soviet submarine groups operating in the Norwegian
sea, and possibly some other small naval craft. From the air the Russians
have many attack and bomber aircraft still intact and are thought to be ready
to use these in strikes against all British forces.

NATO Disposition

The British forces consist of a single carrier group escorting merchant and
Newport class ships to the embattled port of Narvik. Narvik still continues
to operate, and has a force of eight harrier GR2 aircraft stationed there.
In addition, there are two barrier patrol submarines in the ports at
Stornoway and Kinloss, and a few long-range fighter-bomber and anti-sub
aircraft based at Kinloss and Stornoway to help provide air cover for an
evacuation. The exact forces will vary, but expect to have about 14
Tornados and 4 Phantoms and 6 buccaneers, any less and you have been unlucky.

NATO Orders

The orders are simple: to ensure the safe arrival at least one merchant
and one Newport class ship to Narvik, and keep them on station there for
six hours, and then to escort them back to Stornoway or Kinloss, where
similarly they must remain on station for six hrs. To ensure total
victory, you must get two LST's on station at both locations along with
the Invincible. Further the Russians are using Haze ASW helicopters to
ferry munitions and supplies forward to Orland you should destroy at least
four of these to achieve total victory. The on-station box at Narvik
extends upper right corner at Narvik to lower left corner just beneath
the peninsular. The on station box for Stornoway and Kinloss extends
lower right just beneath Kinloss, upper left above Stornoway.
